A 5 page critique of the 1997 completely revised edition of this book on the Japanese criminal justice system. This paper discusses Bayley’s contentions that the low crime rate enjoyed by Japan is more related to a reflection of Japanese history and the traditions, morality, and culture which resulted over that history than it is to factors such as the economy or the types of punishment which are imposed. Emphasizes that Japan has clearly imposed societal expectations, expectations which are both shaped and reinforced by societal institutions, as to how its citizens are to interact. “How Great is G.R.E.A.T. (Gang resistance education and training)?: A Review of the Article Detailing the School-Based Gang Prevention Program

A 10 page overview of the G.R.E.A.T. program and the experimental design of a paper reviewing its effectiveness. G.R.E.A.T. is an in-school program which targets middle school age children in hopes of deterring their interest in joining gangs. Despite the program inconsistencies in design and presentation a national study conducted by researchers at U.S. Department of Justice’s, Crime and Justice Research, declares the study effective.
